63 YEARS OF PEACEFUL
STRUGGLE FOR HUMAN
RIGHTS AND FREEDOM!

WHAT IS THE TIBETAN UPRISING DAY?

10 March 2022 marks the 63rd anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day of 1959, when thousands of Tibetans took to the streets of Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, to protest China’s invasion and occupation of their homeland.

On this day every year, Tibetans and Tibet supporters around the world commemorate those who perished as a result of their
nonviolent resistance and express their solidarity with Tibetans inside Tibet, who continue to suffer under China’s repression.

WHAT IS THE SITUATION IN TIBET?

Today, Tibet continues to be controlled by China, which has dramatically restricted the rights and freedoms of Tibetans - in fact, Tibet is now tied with Syria as the least-free region in the world.

Below are a few examples of what China does in Tibet:

• Occupies Tibet since 1950 in contravention to international law
• Has turned Tibet into a quasi-prison state, where Tibetans’ every move are closely monitored and severely restricted

• Arrests, disappears and tortures Tibetans who criticize Chinese rule and policies
• Restricts religious freedom and interferes in Tibetan Buddhist’s religious affairs - including in the succession of the Dalai Lama
• Arrests Tibetans for celebrating the birthday of their revered spiritual leader the Dalai Lama
• Sends Tibetan children in boarding schools far away from their home, limiting their ability to learn and practice their language and culture
• Forces Tibetans nomads to abandon their traditional way of life through programmes of resettlement
• Discriminates and marginalizes Tibetans, both socially and economically
• Extracts Tibet’s natural resources and endangers its fragile environment and biodiversity
• Isolates it from the rest of the world and censors information about it

As a result of these continuing attacks against their rights and culture,
over 150 Tibetans have self-immolated in Tibet since 2009. Due to China’s assimilationist policies, it is not only the rich and unique Tibetan culture, language and religion that are under threat, but the survival of Tibetans as a distinct people altogether
